Guilin & Yangshuo: The Karst Mountains Itinerary

Updated September 2026 · 10 min read

Guilin is the landscape on the 20 RMB note. Towering limestone peaks rise straight out of rice paddies, the Li River curls between them, and Yangshuo is the small town at the center of it all. Two to three days here is the most scenic stretch of any China trip.

Day 1: Li River Cruise to Yangshuo

The classic day trip: take the Li River cruise from Zhujiang Pier (Yangdi) down to Yangshuo. It's 4–5 hours on a boat, past the karst peaks you've seen on every China poster. This is the view on the back of the 20 RMB note — keep an eye out around Xingping.

Book the lower-class ticket, not the VIP — everyone ends up on the top deck anyway, and the VIP lunch is worse. Bring snacks and water.

Arrive in Yangshuo late afternoon. Check into a boutique hotel in the countryside, not on West Street (too noisy).

Day 2: Yulong River Bamboo Raft & Cycling

This is the highlight. The Yulong River is a smaller, quieter tributary of the Li River. You sit on a bamboo raft (motorized, not poled these days) while it drifts slowly through karst scenery. Stop at shallow beaches, let your feet dangle in the water.

Rent a bicycle or e-bike for the afternoon. Cycle the country roads between Yulong Bridge and Gongnong Bridge. Pass rice fields, villages, buffalo. Stop for farm lunch. This is what people mean by "slow China."

Evening: Impression Sanjie Liu outdoor light show — it's on the river itself, with the karst peaks as backdrop. Touristy, but genuinely spectacular.

Day 3 (Optional): Longji Rice Terraces

If you have an extra day, drive 2 hours to the Longji (Dragon's Backbone) Rice Terraces. The hillsides are carved into thousands of terraces. Best in:

  • June — flooded, mirror-like reflections
  • September–October — golden, ripe rice

Stay overnight in a Zhuang village homestay for sunrise above the clouds.

West Street: Love It or Skip It

Yangshuo's West Street is a pedestrian strip of bars, restaurants, and souvenir shops. It's fun for an hour of people-watching and a beer, but don't eat dinner here — the food is overpriced and catered to tour groups. Walk 5 minutes off the strip for real local meals.

Practical Tips

  • Getting there: High-speed train from Guilin to Yangshuo (30 min). Guilin has a small airport with connections from most major cities.
  • Best time: April–June or September–October. Summer is green but rainy; winter is misty and dramatic.
  • Skip: The "tea mountain" visits and "silver factory" stops included in cheap tours — shopping traps.
  • Money: Bargain at the night market, but the bamboo raft tickets are fixed price — book through your hotel.

Adding Guilin to your route?

Trekscript places Yangshuo at the right point in your China trip — usually between Xi'an and Chengdu, or as a post-Shanghai finale.
